James works with our partner companies and is involved in due diligence of our investments.
Prior to joining TSG, James worked at FFL Partners, where he invested in middle-market companies across a variety of industries. Prior to FFL, James worked at Bain & Company, where he advised clients in the consumer, industrials, and technology industries. James graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. and master’s degree in accounting.
What brings you the most joy in your job?
Seeing or hearing about a brand “in the wild.” I love seeing the brands we’ve partnered with on shelves in the grocery store, hearing a friend or family member tell me how they “couldn’t live without” a given product, or even perusing social media to see consumers’ interactions with a brand. It’s thrilling to watch the brands we work with grow and succeed and to know that we played a role in helping great founders and management teams get there.
What are your greatest sources of inspiration?
Music is my greatest source of inspiration. I’m a classically-trained pianist and have also dabbled in songwriting and production. Rest assured, I’m sticking to my day job, but I have a deep appreciation for how music impacts culture and how it can inspire, motivate, and uplift us. If I’m not talking your ear off about a new brand I’m excited about, expect to hear about the latest album I’m enjoying.
What was your first job?
I started working part time in the machine shop of my family’s small business in Ohio when I was thirteen and continued working there throughout high school. I machined parts on lathes and mills and performed maintenance around the shop. I ended every shift exhausted and covered in grease, but it gave me a strong work ethic. Needless to say, I’m glad I work in an office now!
What attracted you to TSG?
I’m always on the hunt for new and exciting brands and when I find one I can’t wait to tell everyone about it. Many of the brands I love are the very brands with which TSG has partnered in the past or is currently partnered. Getting to work at a firm with such a strong history of building world-class brands—and playing a role in building the next generation of great consumer companies—is a dream come true.
