About the Company
Founded in 1999, Stumptown Coffee Roasters is a third-wave coffee company with a passionate following and an equally intense devotion to responsibly sourcing and artfully roasting coffee beans. Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, Stumptown also operates cafés with in-house roasting facilities in cities including Seattle, New York, Los Angeles. They stock their coffee beans and ready-to-drink Cold Brew beverages in premium groceries and select restaurants across the United States.
The premium specialty coffee category was growing rapidly and presented an opportunity for significant growth. We were impressed with Stumptown for many reasons, including their premium product, the strong brand loyalty its customers exhibited, and their positive company culture. We developed a relationship with the company and completed our five-year investment in May 2011.
Working together, we helped Stumptown craft and execute its growth vision, including opening a new headquarters in Portland and adding roasting operations in Los Angeles.
We also focused on category-disrupting innovation, which led to the expansion of the Cold Brew franchise, starting with the classic stubbie, followed by Cold Brew with Milk, Cold Brew Nitro, among others.
Additionally, we developed a multichannel approach to growth We explored on-premise and foodservice locations, including Stumptown cafes and key influencers like Ace Hotels, Google, and Shake Shack. Next, retail and off-premise locations were added to help drive incentive for foodservice merchants to carry Stumptown products. With an eye toward generating greater brand awareness and loyalty, we elevated the brand’s e-commerce presence.
